How This Flagler College Student is Using Her Writing Experience to Dive into Marketing
We caught up with Team Meerkat’s newest member, Sydney, to ask her about her experience at Flagler College so far, discover which Instagram accounts are currently catching her eye (hint: there’s some delicious food involved), and find out what she’s most eager to learn about in her time with Meerkat.
What is your background?
Hello, my name is Sydney Gorak. I grew up in Bloomsburg, PA, and moved to Ponte Vedra Beach, FL during my junior year of high school. I am a current junior at Flagler College majoring in Strategic Communication and minoring in Digital Media Production and Journalism. I enjoy writing stories on current issues and learning more about the world around us.
What are notable achievements you have accomplished at Flagler College (or beyond) thus far?
Since joining the staff of the Flagler College Gargoyle in January 2020, I have had five articles published. I’ve written a variety of stories and interviewed diverse groups of people. For example, I’ve interviewed two doctors who work at the Baptist Medical Center Hospital in Jacksonville, FL. In the fall of 2019, I wrote a story about the dangers of JUUL and e-cigarettes which was published. In my most recent story, I interviewed a doctor who is actively seeing patients with COVID-19. The story talks about the spread of the virus and what precautions the hospital is planning moving forward.
I’ve also interviewed traveling fashion designer and model Victoria Henley, who was featured in the St. Augustine Fashion Week, as well as a player on the Flagler College baseball team and several local venues in St. Augustine, including a sponsor during the Sing Out Loud Festival.
My writing experience has allowed me to communicate well with individuals through interviews as well as learn how to write proficiently for multiple media platforms. Additionally, through public relations experience, I am able to build relationships with people when communicating with clients and targeted audiences.
Why are you interested in marketing?
I have a passion for building and managing relationships, which is an essential part of marketing and maintaining a successful business.

The top three Instagram accounts I’m following right now are the Kookaburra (@thekookaburra), Maple Street Biscuit Company (@maplestreetbiscuitcompany), and Cosmopolitan (@cosmopolitan).
What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?
During my free time, I enjoy going on a run, studying at a coffee shop downtown, or swimming in a pool or the ocean.
What are you excited to learn at Meerkat?
I am very excited to grow as a professional and gain real-world experience and exposure to the digital marketing world. I am eager to learn more about writing for SEO, lead generation and email marketing. I am excited to be a part of the team!
