Meet Meerkat Media’s Spring Marketing Intern

UF Master’s Student Shares Her Marketing Journey from St. Augustine to France

Meet Madeleine, Meerkat’s newest member of the in-house marketing team. Our new intern spills the tea on her favorite IG accounts, career goals, and more. Read on!

What is your marketing background thus far?

I’m currently earning a master’s in digital strategy from the University of Florida. While studying for my graduate degree I’ve been able to work with several local businesses in Saint Augustine, Savannah, and even France. I have helped these small brands do anything from update graphics and establish social media presences, to create editorial calendars and find their voices. All of these experiences have been great introductions to the world of marketing, and I’m eager to delve further with Meerkat.

What made you decide to pursue marketing?

I’ve always loved communication. I graduated from UF with a B.A. in linguistics in 2018 and fell in love with the science of language. To me, marketing was a great way to take the linguistic theories that I’d studied and apply them in new and interesting ways. I enjoy both strategy (I’m always available to talk about Survivor) and creativity, and I believe marketing rewards both imagination and analysis. Plus, there are always new challenges and every day is different. I never get bored!

What top 3 Instagram accounts are you following right now?

Credit: Lost in City Guides

  1. College Fashionista (@cfashionista) – I joined this online group of women during my undergrad and even though it’s changed quite a bit since 2014, I still love the community! Their Instagram never fails to be a great source of curated inspiration for fashion, beauty, and lifestyle, all produced by its members. Plus, I love how supportive the group is.
  2. Halo Top (@halotopcreamery) – Halo Top’s branding never fails to make me smile (if you haven’t seen it yet, their commercial with Bachelor-alum Nick Viall is great) and their Instagram is no exception. Bright and colorful, it’s the best way to keep on top of new flavor releases and also sometimes shares new ideas for ice cream consumption, like pouring a shot of espresso over their pumpkin pie flavor for a very autumnal affogato.
  3. Lost In City Guides (@lostincityguides) – I love any travel account, but Lost In City Guides has something special. The account is tied to a blog and series of guidebooks for different cities, all curated by locals. That means you’re getting truly unique spots to visit. Plus, their guides make it way easier to find hidden gems. Their Instagram account, which shares a variety of photos of architecture, food, and people, succeeds in communicating that individuality and feels more personable than other accounts whose (always gorgeous) photos sometimes don’t feel attainable.

What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?

I love reading (I just finished Hey Ladies which is a fun, ridiculous, and light read and I’m moving on to A Moveable Feast), kayaking, and hanging out with my dog. Plus, having been lucky enough to study abroad in France and England in my junior year, I’ve developed a travel bug that I think will be sticking with me forever. I’ll never turn down trying a new restaurant, visiting a museum, or flying across the country (or globe) for a spontaneous trip.

Whether or not it’s a good thing, I’m also an avid television watcher. I’m particularly into The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel and Good Omens right now – they both have great visual aesthetics, although they’re quite different. The Great British Bake-Off is also a long-time favorite and never fails to put me in a good mood!

What are you excited to learn at Meerkat?

I’m eager to put my writing skills to the test. Embracing different brand voices and developing content that makes them shine is always a fun challenge and I’m looking forward to taking it on.

I’m also very excited to work with such a variety of clients. Marketing and digital strategy are important across industries, so I’m thrilled to explore the unique obstacles which may arise for different brands. I think this is a great way to apply everything that I’ve learned from my studies and see tangible products and results.
